Your switchboard is the bit of your home you only look at when the power goes out. It sits in a cupboard or on the side of the house quietly sending power to every light, power point and appliance you own. Because it’s out of sight, it’s easy to forget how old it might be.
A lot of Sydney homes still run on switchboards that were installed decades ago, long before air conditioning, induction cooktops and a house full of chargers. So how do you know when yours needs attention?
What a switchboard actually does
Your switchboard splits the power coming into your property into separate circuits. Each circuit is protected so that if something goes wrong, that circuit switches off before it causes damage.
Older boards use ceramic fuses. Newer boards use circuit breakers and safety switches, also called RCDs, which are designed to cut the power quickly if they detect a fault. That difference is a big part of why upgrades come up so often.
Signs your switchboard needs a look
The power trips often
The occasional trip happens. If it’s happening regularly, especially when a few appliances are running at once, it can point to overloaded circuits or a fault somewhere. Either way, it’s worth getting it checked rather than just flicking it back on every time.
Lights flicker or dim
If your lights dim when the kettle or air conditioner kicks in, or flicker for no obvious reason, it may be a loose connection or a sign the board is struggling.
You still have ceramic fuses
If your board has the old white fuses you pull out and rewire, it’s an older setup. It may also have little or no safety switch protection.
Buzzing, warmth or a burning smell
These need attention straight away. If you notice a burning smell, smoke or anything overheating, stop using the affected equipment and call a licensed electrician.
You’re adding something big
Planning to add air conditioning, a new kitchen, an extension or a pool? Your existing board might not have the capacity or space for new circuits. It’s much easier to sort this out during the planning stage.
Why older Sydney homes are often due
Many homes in the Inner West, Eastern Suburbs and the older parts of North Sydney were wired for a very different way of living. Terraces and Federation homes often have boards that have been added to over the years, sometimes more than once.
That doesn’t automatically mean the board is unsafe. It does mean it’s worth having a licensed electrician check it, especially if the home is new to you or you’re planning work.
What a switchboard upgrade involves
It starts with an inspection
We look at your existing board, the circuits it runs and how you use power in the home. Sometimes a repair or a couple of added safety switches is all that’s needed. Sometimes a full replacement makes more sense.
A clear quote before any work starts
You’ll know what we’re recommending and why before anything happens. No surprises.
The work itself
The power to the property will be off while the board is replaced, so we’ll let you know how long to expect. Once it’s done, the new board is tested and the circuits are labelled so you know what’s what.
Your compliance certificate
In NSW, electricians must lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) for this kind of job. You can ask for a copy for your records.
Questions to ask before you book
If you’re not sure whether your board needs work, a few quick questions can help you decide:
- How old is the house and has the switchboard ever been replaced?
- Does the power trip more in summer or winter?
- Have you added big appliances since you moved in?
- Do you know which switch runs which part of the house?
If you’re answering “not sure” to most of these, a switchboard check is a sensible next step. It also gives you a clear picture of where things stand if you’re buying, selling or planning work down the track.
Can I check my switchboard myself?
You can keep an eye out for the warning signs above from outside the board, like how often it trips. Please don’t remove covers or work inside the switchboard. That’s a job for a licensed electrician, every time.
Switchboards for strata and commercial properties
Switchboard work isn’t just for houses. We also work on switchboards for commercial premises and strata buildings, including common area circuits. For strata and property managers, a check can help you plan upgrades ahead of time rather than reacting when something trips.
Getting ready for summer
Summer is when switchboards get tested hardest in Sydney. Air conditioners, fans and pool pumps all running at once can show up weaknesses in an older board. If yours has been giving you trouble, spring is a good time to get it looked at.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need a switchboard upgrade?
Frequent tripping, flickering lights, old ceramic fuses or plans for a big new appliance are all good reasons to get it checked. An inspection will tell you whether it needs a repair, an upgrade or nothing at all.
Is it safe to keep resetting a switchboard that trips?
If it trips once in a while, resetting it is fine. If it keeps happening, get a licensed electrician to find the cause rather than resetting it again and again.
Do you upgrade switchboards in strata and commercial buildings?
Yes. We work on switchboards in homes, commercial premises and strata properties across Sydney.
